Rich Chocolate Baklava With Nuts and Flaky Pastry

Chocolate baklava is the same stack but with cocoa in the nut filling, which makes it richer. I use a dark cocoa so it reads as chocolate, not sugar.

The chocolate baklava recipe is easy to follow and results in a sweet, nutty treat that is perfect for impressing guests or enjoying with family.

Decadent Chocolate Baklava with Nuts

Rich chocolate baklava with flaky pastry and nuts, drizzled with syrup, on a rustic table.

This chocolate baklava is made with layers of phyllo dough, generously filled with a blend of chopped nuts and melted chocolate, then baked to perfection. It’s drizzled with a sweet syrup mixture for added sweetness. The recipe takes about 1 hour from start to finish and serves 12 pieces.

Ingredients

  • 1 package phyllo dough (16 oz), thawed
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups mixed nuts (walnuts, almonds, pistachios), finely chopped
  • 1 cup chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Syrup: In a saucepan, combine sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract. Bring to a boil, then simmer for about 10 minutes. Allow it to cool.
  2. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  3. Layer Phyllo Dough: Brush a 9×13-inch baking dish with melted butter. Place one sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush with butter. Repeat until you have 6 layers.
  4. Mix Filling: In a bowl, combine chopped nuts, chocolate chips, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Spread half of the mixture over the phyllo layers in the dish.
  5. Continue Layering: Add 3 more sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter. Then add the rest of the nut and chocolate mixture. Top with another 6 sheets of phyllo, again brushing butter on each.
  6. Cut and Bake: Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown.
  7. Add Syrup: Remove baklava from the oven and immediately pour the cooled syrup over it. Allow it to soak for at least 2 hours before serving.
