Festive Candy Cane Meringues

These meringues are made with egg whites, sugar, and crushed candy canes, creating a sweet and minty treat that melts in your mouth. The recipe takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes from start to finish and yields approximately 24 meringues.

Ingredients

  • 4 large egg whites
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 1/4 cup crushed candy canes
  • Red food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 200°F (93°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Whip Egg Whites: In a clean, dry mixing bowl, beat the egg whites on medium speed until foamy. Add the cream of tartar and continue to beat until soft peaks form.
  3. Add Sugar: Gradually add the granulated sugar, one tablespoon at a time, while continuing to beat on high speed until the mixture is glossy and stiff peaks form.
  4. Flavoring: Gently fold in the vanilla extract, peppermint extract, and crushed candy canes. If desired, add a few drops of red food coloring and swirl gently to create a marbled effect.
  5. Pipe Meringues: Transfer the meringue mixture to a piping bag fitted with a star tip. Pipe small mounds onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about an inch apart.
  6. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour, or until the meringues are dry and can easily be lifted off the parchment paper. Turn off the oven and let the meringues cool completely inside with the door slightly ajar.
  7. Serve: Once cooled, serve the meringues as a festive treat or store them in an airtight container for up to a week.
