Science Confirms Tequila Is Good For Your Bones

Until now, Kenny Chesney had said it best, “tequila makes her clothes fall off.”

But…

Science has stepped in to change the narrative a bit.

“Tequila makes her bones….stronger?”

Not quite as catchy, but certainly holds more weight.

According to a study from the Center for Research and Advanced Studies in Mexico, tequila helps the body absorb calcium and magnesium, leading to stronger bones—making the agave-based spirit part of a healthy diet.

Science Daily reports that the study determined fructans (sugar molecules contained in blue agave, the plant from which tequila is made) help lab mice produce osteocalcin, a critical component to growing new, thicker bones. Dr. Mercedes López, the project’s leader, attributed the effects to an interaction between the fructans and bacteria in the intestines, which allow the sugar molecules to capture nutrients that are passed through the digestive system, and effectively carry them to bone cells.

The researchers are optimistic that their findings will ultimately aid patients suffering from osteoporosis.

But for now….
