Easy Mediterranean Stuffed Grape Leaves Recipe

A platter of Mediterranean stuffed grape leaves with lemon slices and yogurt dip, set on a rustic wooden table.

These stuffed grape leaves are made with tender grape leaves wrapped around a savory filling of rice, fresh herbs, and spices. The recipe takes about 1 hour to prepare and serves 6 people, making it a great choice for gatherings or meal prep.

Ingredients

  • 1 jar of grape leaves in brine (about 16 oz), drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup uncooked rice (preferably short grain)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/4 cup fresh dill, chopped
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt, adjust to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups vegetable or chicken broth
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Sour cream or yogurt for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Filling: In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the chopped onion and garlic until soft and translucent. Stir in the rice, parsley, dill, salt, and pepper, and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  2. Fill the Leaves: Place a grape leaf on a flat surface, shiny side down. Put about a tablespoon of the rice mixture at the base of the leaf, fold the sides in, and roll it tightly. Repeat until all the leaves and filling are used.
  3. Arrange the Rolls: In a large pot, arrange the stuffed grape leaves seam-side down in layers. Drizzle with the remaining olive oil and lemon juice, and carefully pour the broth over the rolls, covering them about 3/4 full.
  4. Cook the Dish: Place a plate on top of the stuffed grape leaves to keep them submerged. Cover the pot and cook over low heat for about 45 minutes, or until the rice is tender.
  5. Serve: Allow to cool slightly before serving. These grape leaves are best enjoyed warm, accompanied by sour cream or yogurt if desired.
